This was great! I think I’m going to check out attendr see if I can make it work with some of the things I’m working on.

Although I’m finally catching up on my blog reading, and this was originally posted a few weeks ago, it is timely in that I just participated in Intellagirl’s Tuesday Challenge where she asked readers to check out a Web 2.0 app and review it. Nice to see attendr is working better now. I set one up for Northern Voice back in February but the main problem was that it would only resolve US addresses, not Canadian ones, so it looked like every attendee to a local conference in Vancouver was from Georgia!?!

Not sure if attendr’s accounts are available for other apps to use. The thing it is missing is a wiki. It would be cool if you could use the account people set up in attendr to log into a wiki or else if they simply integrated one in. attndr handles the aggregation piece nicely and is a logical step from the ad hoc “hey everyone just use this tag for the conference” technique that’s prevailed to date. But the other piece I want from conferences is to optimize my experience while there – e.g. a wiki to self-organize around such important topics
- does anyone know a good rib joint in town?
- what’s the conference back channel?
- have you heard this speaker before, any good?

This is great stuff Alan, raising the bar for conferences everywhere and showing how to transform them from the dreary affairs they are often times becoming into events that use this precious f2f times to leverage the ongoing conversations and interactions that are increasingly part of our everyday lives online.

Tim- the tags come from the profiles of the people who add their locations to the map. It might help to give a private invite to people who know will jump in so the map can have tags.

I did not realize a lot of this- I jumped before I swam. I might suggest when you ask people to use it to give some guidance on how to tag themselves e.g. grade, subject, state, interests…

Its also a little obscure how you ad yourself to the map; I ended up doing it twice and cannot find a way to remove duplicates. It’s all beta.

Hey Alan,
As always, great work. Thanks for the great ideas and implementation. I am messing around with attendr for the edubloggercon at NECC in Atlanta. I have created a page, but all I seem to get is the map. How does it gather the tags? Can you assign specific ones to look for?

Thanks for the tip, Laura- I played with netvibes maybe a year or two ago when looking at sites like Google Home Page… A Public view seems a natural option. These are absolutely the spirit of small pieces loosely joined.

I just set up a netvibes site for our department. Apparently, very soon, there will be the option to make that public–a universe they’re calling it. Some commercial ventures already have these–the washington post and a few others. Might be a good alternative to PageFlakes.
