Alan, was fun to discover your first days of Shanghai. My first reaction was to recommend strongly a visit to the museum - just like Liz :-) I was there, 12 years ago, right after the official opening of a magnificent museum! Our very strictly prepared China roundtrip tour made me want to escape from time to time, and do my own discoveries. This museum was excellent as a walkthrough of Chinese cultural history, material as well as spiritual and educational. The calligraphy studies and paintings made me understand traditions of the past and present. And, as a bonus back then, a special expo of M.C. Escher (who had a special connection with Shanghai somehow).
Browsing now makes me aware that there is actually an ongoing Escher expo very close to my home, in Denmark!

I LOVE Shanghai! Spouse was there for a conference in 2002 and I was treated to several sight-seeing and shopping excursions with grad student guides.

Do NOT miss the new museum. The bronze collection is organized chronologically from 1000s of years ago and is utterly amazing.
