I'm at an academic conference right now. And I'm struck by this focus on where people work, about the competitive nature of the relationships, by the fact that they read their papers (very structured pieces, of course). It's deadening, I think. The sad thing is I think there's real potential for doing good work, for collaborating rather than competing, but they're so stuck in these hierarchies and rely on them for their self-worth that they can't imagine what something else looks like.
