Wikipedia became arguments over what is "notable" finally got tired of votes for delition and left. Was largely trying to work on BC and Canadian geographic and Education entries.

To the brand point both have value based on user contributions. Obviously WikiP motivations is much less a problem than Facebook but in either case you get to a point where you question the value to yourself to continue to contribute.

That's an interesting angle that I'd like to hear more about, Bill. I can't remember the source that early on described a magic balance in shared sites that give primarily a benefit to the individual, but then adds a useful layer on top by it being shared. flickr fits that for me, whereas facebook falls short.

I'm not sure I get where contributing to WikiPedia subsumes your efforts to its brand; isn't there a bit of credo by being a well known contributor? What have you lost by adding to WikiPedia? Just curiois....

The debate on privacy and the policies of Facebook is certainly worth debating. But the increasing problem of the online world is how much of my time and effort I want to spend building someone else's 'brand'. I had the same problem is some ways with the idea of contributing to Wikipedia.

Hmmmm...up until you asked I have never actually gone back to see how easy they are to find. Turns out, it was pretty darn easy. Click on Notes and there they are, comments and all.

At any rate, my point here is to agree with you. FB doesn't make it easy to get the stuff I really want out of it out - which, in this case, are those comments. But in this respect, I don't think I can blame FB. They are (ironically) respecting the privacy of the people who post comments on my imported notes and keeping it behind the wall. But I hope that by this time next week, FB will have revised their default privacy settings and I'll be free and good to slurp all those juicy little comments out :).

@Clint I rode that rationalization train a while. However, how easy is it for you to find those conversations again? I will have another approach- if there is a blog post I choose to share on FB, I will manually add it as a link. I know that means fewer comments (not that I ever get more than 5), but its my line in the sand.

I can't tell you how many times I have posted something on my blog, had it slurped into my FB account, and had all the really good conversation happen on that post in FB. Man, how I wish I could bring some of that conversation back to my blog and engage both audiences.

The rub is, if I didn't feed that info into FB, those conversations would never have happened in the first place. Love it or hate it, a good part of my network is there, and that is where they choose to engage with me. As much as I wish I could have it all nicely packaged up on my blog, it just doesn't happen. So I have to carry on conversations in multiple places, wishing the whole time it didn't have to be so.
