This is a follow up on Gardner Campbell’s message last night when we did a ds106 radio show, echoed today by Jim Groom at his evangelistic Open Ed keynote. Gardner said something about “We dont need Open Education Resources, what we need are Open Education Experiences!” My thought now, given Jim’s passion (and all of ours) for ds106 is– Are You Experienced? If not, then no time is better then now! Get Open Experienced at http://ds106.us/

Honestly! My iPhone Jumped Out of My Hand
cc licensed ( BY NC ) flickr photo shared by duncan Wow, I do a little bit of internet fiction of oneself and people stop believing me. I swear, honestly, this really happened to me yesterday. What can a swear on a stack of? On the trip from Daniel Boone National Forest (Kentucky) headed towards Blacksburg, Virginia, I enjoyed some beautiful two lane driving over the autumn doused mountains. cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog Heading west to Bristol on highway 58, I was drawn in by the sign for Natural Tunnel State Park. It is really a naturally formed tunnel through the limestone that is used as a passage for the railroad. My kind fo place to wander, take photos, enjoy in the non-tourist season. After parking at the top, I managed to miss the trailhead down to the bottom, where the tunnel is (and [...]
Flag a GIFs
Flags make for great animated GIFs- I spotted this set of flags in Cookesville Tennessee, a US flag at half mast and a MIA flag. The first one is only 2 frames, the second 4. I was not even planning to GIF these, but the camera was in the mode of rapid fire shooting. And the light was good in the morning. These were done in same fashion as my other photo gifs- import as stack into Photoshop, use its alignment option, and then monkey around in animation window.
Blues Harp Lesson 3
Not much of a lesson, just me making some harmonica noise while camping in Kentucky. I play a bit of great harmonica from Hans Olson “Where’s the Grey?” and dream of being able to play like that.

All Your Apps Are Welded Boxes
cc licensed ( BY SD ) flickr photo shared by Steve-h I might now go as far to say I “love” my iPhone, but it must be my most regularly used piece of technology. But my first love was, and will be, the web- that bit that works because Sir Tim made it so that we can always cc licensed ( BY NC ND ) flickr photo shared by Niro View Source… is the most overlooked element of the open web. Tonight, I was jarred to this by an accidental discovery- that in the land of mobile apps, you are subject to the whims of parts you will never see. Here is how it goes. A few days ago, through a chance twitter mention, I got to speak via Skype to some students of Helen Keegan over in the UK. IN browsing my feed tonight in the Instagram app, I [...]
Storyboxing the Friendly Skies
cc licensed (BY) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog My StoryBox had a tougher time getting passed the TSA at the Buffalo airport. They were extremely curious, though I did learn it was a mistake to refer to it as a "PIrate Box" which raised their curiosity to code yellow. Actually it was not a huge hassle. On my last 3 trips, it went through unquestioned. On my flight out, they got stuck on a small metal pen that supposedly looked bullet like. Before that, it was my harmonica which set them off. The fear is consistent if the methods are not. I thought for future trips I would print out the PirateBox wiki page. All I need to say, "It is an artistic provocation, man. I am making art, damnit!" But now it is perched happily in the US Airways club. It wants a beer. (Note, given the contrast with [...]
StoryBox Demo at Brock University
cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog I was excited to have my Journey to the Center of the Internet weirdness interrupted by an invitation to do an informal workshop/demo of the StoryBox Project for Brock University. On my pass through the region in August, I missed out on their Narrative INstitute, and was please to hear of their interest in this project. Thanks to Guilia Forsythe for helping me weave this into my own sputtering narrative. I have a full audio archive but want to jot down some ideas, thoughts as they evaporate. StoryBox Demo at Brock University I framed my own interests in web storytelling, a bit of 50+ Web 2 Ways to Tall a Story, Five Card Flickr, and my notion of practicing improv via pechaflickr. In framing storytelling, I used an example I’ve tapped into before, of how good cinematic techniques (short cuts, [...]
Shhhh, I am talking about ds106 radio
cc licensed ( BY NC ND ) flickr photo shared by rakkadeer I was locked into my spy mode, but had responded to DrGarcia’s call for audio clips to support the recent Schwartz Institute Seminar on DIY Radio : I was already on the run from the city and could not attend the session; sadly I heard my audio volume was a bit on the low side to use, so I wanted to make sure I was heard (I boosted the levels, sorry for not checking it GNA). ds106 radio from CogDog The archives of the full session are available DIY Web Radio, Part 1 of 2 from BLSCI on Vimeo. DIY Web Radio, Part 2 of 2 from BLSCI on Vimeo. Curse the search for the Center of the Internet, I missed an amazing session!
Mission Revealed
I’ve lost any sense of what the search for the Center of the Internet means, but now, with the assistance of Obi Don Potter, I was able to get the message on the device left for me in Philadelphia. It appears I am needed to give a Storybox demo at Brock University, and I have to get there tomorrow. Some back tracking… cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog After traveling by buses from Philadelphia, I got to the Port Authority bus terminal in New York, and found my way to the pre-arranged meeting spot with Obi Don Potter, here at the Bleeker Street subway. He was confused at first by this device I brought, and seemed skeptical of who I was, but seemed to have a sense of what to do with it. “We do not have long,” he said. “Ride with me uptown, and I [...]
