Year End Bloggings (No Rest for Spammers)

I’ve finally caught up with my other colleagues in getting into relaxed, holiday, not-at-the-office for a while mode. One of the nice side perks of working in education is getting their holiday schedule, so I am away from the building until January 3, hibernating up in our comfy cabin in Strawberry, in frequently sipping the internet through a 28 kbs dial-up straw. We’re wondering where winter is, as high pressure over the southwest has our temps in the mid 60s in the day, and barely below 50 at night, maybe 20 degrees warmer than it ought to be. And there has not been significant precipitation here in Arizona since October. We want snow, but there nearest moisture must be 1000 miles away. Even the last week at Maricopa, the internal email dropped off to almost nil as most made an early exit, and my major accomplishment on my last day [...]

WordPress Search Bookmarklet

As part of the blog transition I took a spin at creating a new tool that would create a WordPress search bookmarklet, more or less a quick re-do of the one I originally created for MovableType. It is even easier to construct for WordPress, as all you need to know is the base URL for the WP blog- the WordPress search URL is very simple, merely the URL plus a value to pass for the key word search: http://www….WP-blog-url/index.php?s=blog making it really easy to create permanent bookmarks for blog searches, e.g., my spam roach collection: http://cogdogblog.com/index.php?s=spam+roach. Hmmm, this is a sneaky way to make new pseudo categories. Anyhow, another cheap WP hack is the new Make a WordPress Search Bookmarklet- it allows you to create a browser bar tool that can either do a search of a particular WP blog using any text highlighted in a page, or it will [...]

Another Bookmarklet Tool- Quick Furl Search

I cannot claim this was an Urgent/Important task, but my curiosity got the better of me… I made a new bookmarklet tool that allows me to run a search against my furl-ed sites either by entering the search terms or by highlighting the words in any web mouse-selectable content. This avoids having to load a search interface , and may save me seconds of precious time ;-) Like I said, it was just a fun little programming task. See the new Furl Search Maker: http://cogdogblog.com/alan/furl_search_maker.php to create your own, another in the set including the Multi-Site Submission Tool Maker, and the MovableType Search Bookmarklet. This one is just out of the hatch, and not widely tested beyond my own browser(s).

Roll Your Own MT Search Bookmarklet

Now that the Furl-Delicious-Frassle-CiteULike-Connotea-Bag Bookmarklet Tool (a simepl web form to help you build a one click browser bar tool for adding web sites to various collections) seems to be working– I decided to make another tool. This one helps you create a browser bar button for quick searching of any MovableType weblog, as described December 5, 2004. So here is the new MT Search Bookmarklet Maker: http://cogdogblog.com/alan/mt_search_maker.php I use this extensively to search my own blog without needed to load the main page, or to do a quick search from any other web page using highlighted words on that page (like the Google Search button).

MT Blog Search Bookmarklet

I am a bit amazed I never thought of this earlier… the primary use for CogDogBlog is pure selfish- tracking things or projects so I can have a record I can find later. More often than not, i am trying to remember a site or reference from a few months/years back, and the only way to look for it is go to my, ahem, overloaded main page, and using the search form. But in the last 15 minutes, I wrote a quick little JavaScript that allows me to do a quick search and bypass the main page. Actually I ripped it pretty much from the Google Browser Buttons, which does a quick Google search on any highlighted text for a page in view, or if no text is selected, provides a pop up box to type in the search words. A dull beam of light said tonight– “hey, I could [...]
