Sometimes I do not get what I intended in a photograph, and end up trashing them. In this case, I got something different, but better. This was a series where I was attempting to get a panning photo of something in motion, where you use a relatively slow shutter speed, and move the camera at [...]

Nice Doggy
This is the second week of bootcamp for our online ds106 classes at University of Mary Washington; and one of the assignments this week is a challenge. We asked out students to create an animated GIF in response to the Say it Like Peanut Butter assignment– and purposely did not provide explicit instructions. What we are curious to see is how people figure out how to learn something on their own (or if they are clever, they will ask/search). What we want is not for our students to create masterful GIFs (well that’s ok if they do), but to get the hang of creating blog posts that correctly use the tags from the Assignment Collection. Part of our philosophy as teachers is to do the same work we ask our students to do. What should I do? What movie? Hmmm, stay with my dog theme… And I thought of last [...]
(see the full barking...)Skamper Gone a Decade
Curse you Google calendar with your accurate reminders. Curse you for being so prim about it. Especially when I really need to just get a night of sleep longer than 5 hours. Curse you.. Well, I cannot really go down that route. But I just got a little pop up message and it says it has been ten years, a decade for poops sake, since my dog Skamper passed away cc licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by cogdogblog That photo was him as a puppy, and me with a lot less years and miles on me. 1996, heck that was the first round for me and a ponytail. He was a birthday surprise, intended as a frisbee chasing classic labrador, but turning out to be a bit more… shrunken as he was apparently mixed with a Chow. He was both sweet and quirky, and right now I am [...]
(see the full barking...)I’m Your Dog
Thanks to the glory of keyword search and random related videos linking, today I found the new theme song for CogDogBlog– I can hear your toes tapping to this song by comedian Sean Morey, but just so you can enjoy it more, I put some energy into transcribing it. I am your dog and I think you’re neat I like to chew on your antiques I bark like crazy when you come in Then I make love to your shin I’m here through thick and thin I’m your dog I see your keys, let’s go go go I stick my head out the window I jump up on your friends and dance After I’m done sniffing their pants I’m just into romance I’m your dog If my nose is wet, I’m a healthy dog If the carpet’s wet, I get the hell out of dodge I go outside take a [...]
(see the full barking...)Not Dog Writing? The Dog Reading
cc licensed flickr photo shared by dchrisoh This year I fell out of NaNoWriMo only 12 days in, and it was a good thing. I could sense form where I was, that my attempt at writing a World According to Dogs novel was maybe at best, a not original idea and not welle executed. But failing writing about dogs, I’m into some good reading some books, here in my Kindle app, in the “dog vein” I want to credit John King for his comment that led me to read the marvelous, yet bittersweet, Timbuktu. In that story, told by the world wise “Mr Bones” we find the dog seeing a parting of the ways with his estranged, yet dog-loved, human companion, the mentally off kilter. homeless, and dying, Willy G Christmas. It was a quick read, yet like a coat of dried mud, I cannot quite shake it. It is, [...]
(see the full barking...)From Argentina Comes New Ways of Telling Dominoe’s Story
If you’ve clicked by my 50+ Web 2.0 Ways to Tell Story you will know I have told the same old dog story 50+ times, so it was a refreshing suprise when I got an email tonight from Claudia Ceraso describing a novel way she used Dominoe’s flickr set as a way to have her students create their own stories based solely on what they cold imagine from the photo set. I have shared with my teen and young adult students your Dominoe story. I simply showed them the slideshow without the text and told them it was part of a real life story. I asked them to write and here is the result: four stories -some done collaboratively, some not. I should have recorded the brainstorming we had after seeing your pics projected in an IWB. Their first reaction was to talk about feelings and a potential sad ending [...]
(see the full barking...)Dive into Dogs
Over this morning’s coffee I was rummaging around my flickr stats. Yum, stats. If you have never done this, there is an incredible amount if interesting information you can find there, like I have no idea why there was a spike of 2000+ views on November 22. Or you can find which of your photos has been viewed/favorite the most, or see where the referrer links are coming from. I was looking at the stats when I saw a referrer from the dive into mark site, a place I usually go for excellent technical resources or writings. So I wondered why his site might be linking to my photos… Well, it turns out that into 2007, Mark created a giant mural of The Dogs of flickr cc, where he made this collage of 648 individual flickr photos, all of them creative common licenses. Somewhere in there was one of mine. [...]

(see the full barking...)Four Paws Up for Nellie’s Dog Song!
How could I resist a title in my RSS Reader from the TED Blog called “Nellie McKay: The Dog Song”: If you need a companion Just go to the pound get yourself a hound and make the dog proud. That’s what it’s all about It’s a lot of fun; even downloaded the MP4 to have it on my iPhone. There are so many things to like about the TED videos- besides an amazing array of top speakers on compelling topics (like dogs!), the fact that they are not long monologues, the way it is provided online, in several formats, is top notch. But there was more when i was watching the video is how great the video production is– not really my expertise, but some key things about the TED video style: * Very clear audio nothing breaks a good video than lousy audio, crackly audio, audio levels wrong. TED [...]
