Last week I was at an NMC Board meeting, hosted at a very special location in Cupertino, and was oh, so overwrought with jealousy as colleagues pawed, swashed, swooshed with their shiny new iPhones. And I would be among the cool kids– if were it not for the utterly ridiculous lock AT&T has on being a sole provider of connectivity. Whatever happened to the old American spirit of competition? Free markets? I cannot answer the economic theory questions, but my NoiPhone status remains as the sole provider for connectivity has almost no signal in the part of the state I spend a lot of time, and likely a lot more in the future. As such, the iPhone would be all ‘i” and no “phone” (and no “net” unless I was near wifi). My rant is all about me. Or Them. AT&T plasters these full color page ads in our Sunday [...]

Liebook?
How is that for timing? The day after last rant about the way Facebook sends messages by email (“You have a message! I know it! You Don’t! But I wont tell you unless you visit me and get sucked into my vortex! hahahaha” might that be McLuhan on the side, “the message is not the message”??), apparently they changed their ways, and now include the message in the email. Hallelujah? Hardly. Since I turned all notifications off, my inbox has been mostly clean of FaceGunk. Mostly. I am still getting notifications of these “X-me” items, although I dont have the application installed, and thus I cannot dictate its messaging. This use of email to me just reeks of the worthlessness of the message. “Click here to see the message’!!!! Click here, Facebook, I got a message for ya. Now this perhaps angry, growling post is mostly in jest, and while [...]
Facebook Facebook Facebook (Link Farm Spam Bait)
Considering the blog post immediately before this one drew a link farm spam trackback in near real time, I am testing them to see how quickly they pick this one up. The site that spammed ne is purportedly called “Social Networking News for Myspace / Facebook / Etc.” but is composed entirely of blog post lifted from elsewhere and covered with Google ad links. It is certainly NOT a blog by any extent, it is an abuse of the web and its about time these ***ers were stepped on. So as a test I will say something about them. Social Networking News for Myspace / Facebook / Etc is an ugly fake blog site permeated by stolen fragments from other posts. The people who foster this sort of waste on the internet are destined for a special low level of karmatic destiny, should I have any say in that event. [...]
Shuddup You, Facebook!
This dog has put down a paw on the dominant proliferating swine source of email bacn. Getting an email notification of an “X me” message (no idea why that is different from any other message), I wasted my time/bandwidth to find someone sent me a snowman. Thanks, sweet thought, but… I will not put up with notification by email that does not include in the notification some indication of the message, if not the full message itself. So the kibosh has been placed on my facebook account. Notifications are set to “off” down the line. Stay out of my inbox, swine. If I want to find out what lies in my facebook, I will choose when and where to know– I will check it myself. Maybe once a week, once a month, once a … Again, I am not being closeminded to Facebook, but just because I have previously said [...]
Nepal Is Cool For Dogs
Thanks to Marie C here at Tulane for sharing this BBC Story, In pictures: Nepal dogs honouredImage from BBC Nepal is celebrating the festival of Tihar, its equivalent of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. In Nepal, on the second day of the feast, special honour is bestowed on dogs. On this day, called Kukur Pooja or Kukur Tihar, its canines are garlanded, adorned with the Hindu powder of blessing, the tika, and given festive food including sweetmeats – jalabis. According to the Hindu scripture, the Mahabharat, dogs accompanied Dharmaraj Yudhisthir on his journey to heaven. There is also a Hindu belief that dogs guard the underworld. Go Nepal! Let’s Celebrate Tihar!
Free Polls — with Embedded Porn Links
This is really disturbing. I was looking quickly to embed a quick poll into a web page, so why not reach for a free easy tool? The first google hit on free web poll, nupolls.com, was nothing fancy, but seemed to do the job (ugh, decrepit 1999 vintage HTML generated). Until I glanced at the copy/paste code. Down at the bottom was a bunch of embedded links to sites I would not want to link to (actual URLs obscured) – note the explanation provided: <td><!– This is why service free –> <a href="http://xxxxxxx.net" target="_blank"><font>rape pay sites</font></a> <a href="http://xxxxxxx.org/page6.php"><font>1</font></a> <a href="http://xxxxxxx.org/page7.php"><font>2</font></a> <a href="http://xxxxxxx.org/page8.php"><font>3</font></a> <a href="http://xxxxxxx.org/page9.php"><font>4</font></a> <a href="http://xxxxxxx.org/page10.php"><font>5</font></a> <!– End : N–></td> Their Privacy Page states: External Links This site contains links to other sites nuPolls.Com is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of such Web sites. It does not exactly say that the free service they provide is [...]

New Form of Link Farm Spam – Lonely Girl Blogs
Link spammers never sleep. They are hard at work breaking around the edges of our futile efforts to keep ‘em at bay. And now they are getting harder to sniff out at first glance in the moderation queue, as they clothe their efforts in false fronts, which, if like an old wester ghost town, when you peek around the corner there is nothing there. Link farms are sites aimed at one miserable purpose- boosting Google Rank. What they do is create tons of inward nested links, a few outward ones towards their client sites (the ones they are trying to boost) and try to get links to their sites by spamming blogs with comments that backlink to the farm. If you ever follow the links back to the farm, the daily posts are not posts at all, just a list of snippets copied from other blogs. So one tries to [...]
Phone Roaches
01 roach flick treatment posted 29 Sep ’05, 4.19am MDT PST on flickr A nightmare. Reoccuring. I was cleaning off my Edirol of old files and forget I had recorded this phone spam. I get recurring automated message calls on my do not call listed work number- they leave no number, so its hard to report. So when I was there to get the spam, I aimed to try and let them know they were breaking the law. The first time, I kept pressing the number supposedly to get them to stop. Yeah, like that worked: http://cogdogblog.com/wp-content/audio/phome-spam.mp3 The second time, I pressed the “1″ to talk to an operator. When the person came on, I asked if they knew they were calling a listed number in the Do Not Call registry. The person kept reading from a recorded sales pitch. I asked them to take me off the list. The [...]
