Winnipeg to Thunder Bay is fairly boring. I would suggest blasting that piece as quickly as you can. Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie is GORGEOUS and then you get into mediocre travel down to Windsor (IMHO). If you need to tent near Thunder Bay I would suggest Kakebeka Falls Provincial Park. Sleeping Giant is actually nicer but it is about a half hour off the highway and it is often full. Best scenery is Thunder Bay to Marathon and Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie. (Marathon to Wawa is just like Kenora to Thunder Bay - bush, lakes, rock, lakes, bush, swamp, swamp, bush...) Thunder Bay has some great food and I can suggest places to eat depending on when you arrive there. Terry Fox Lookout just NE of TBay is really worth the stop for a gorgeous view of the Sleeping Giant. If you have time to drive into Ouimet Canyon it is worth seeing but it is 1bout 14 km off the highway and then you have to walk in about 2 km. If you are looking to stretch your legs it is a neat spot. After that drive straight to Nipigon (there is a Tim Horton's there) and then after Nipigon it gets really pretty. About 15 - 20 km out of Nipigon you will see wildly red sedimentary rocks on your left and then pay attention because you get some gorgeous views of Lake Superior and some really neat rock formations. There are pulloffs to take photos. It's pretty all along there but when you see the sign "Rossport 20 km" pay attention again. You will get into the really big hills and sometimes you will feel like you are driving right into Lake Superior. Rossport has a wonderful restaurant (Serendipity Gardens). Tell them I sent you. Schreiber is a railway town that looks dingy but the Voyageur with the big red pointed roof has great authentic Italian food. The Aguasabon Gorge is a neat spot with a short walk to the gorge where you can take some really pretty shots of Lake Superior. Terrace Bay is VERY pretty. Take a minute to park and go up the lighthouse that you can see from the highway. Drifters Restaurant at the Esso has more authentic Italian food and pretty good wraps if you need a snack. Terrace Bay to Marathon is twisty and full of moose. I nearly hit one there last week. Actually, I did hit it but it just brushed the insects of my front panel and the back of my side mirror! The scenery is amazing so take it slow. Marathon has a decent coffee shop (Rumours) but you have to drive the 4 km off the highway to get to it. After that, some people like to stop at the Winnie the Pooh site in White River but if you don't have kids, drive to Wawa. There is a Tim Hortons in Wawa. About 30 km from Wawa you are into Lake Superior Provincial Park and Old Woman Bay (at the end of a long downhill that looks like you are driving into Lake Superior) is worth a stop to play on the beach. Other places include Agawa Bay, Pancake Bay, Batchawana Bay and Katherine Cove. The best swimming is at Katherine Cove, about an hour from Wawa on the right. Best tenting is at Rainbow Falls (Lake Superior site) just past Rossport, or Neys Provincial Park (between Terrace Bay and Marathon) and then Agawa or Pancake Bay south of Wawa. Call me when you are near Thunder Bay for more info. Ask questions any time. I have been commuting along the north shore for three years so I know this area like the back of my hand! This is the most beautiful part of Ontario by far! We live on a lake just off the highway if you need a break for a swim or a kayak between Thunder Bay and Nipigon. I also have the best beer on the north shore! Drive safely!!
