It’s been a nice cuppa days here since arriving in Melbourne…

My long time friend Jan, whom I knew way back when when we both worked at Maricopa, came into the city to lunch Saturday and walk a bit with me (and enjoy two cups of coffee in the laneway near my apartment). Jan has lived here since 1995 and has twice shown me around Victoria.
On Sunday I met up with Rowan Peter a DS106 original, he of the crickets on ds106 radio and ds106 lawn art.

We walked to Victoria Market in a vain effort to find props for my workshop, but I did enjoy my first Borek. It’s been maybe 6 years since we hung out, the time we stumbled across the artist who installed the Giant Theremin on Southbank.
His son Alex has just a pup then, apparently he’s a big 7 now.

I’m hoping see the whole family in 2 weeks for a BBQ at Rowan’s house.
And I am here today for the Melbourne Cup, more or less an Aussie National Holiday. And a horse race. Yes, a horse race.
The day I got off the airport bus at Southern Cross Station I noticed all the nicely dressed people in costume. No one told me about that! And yesterday, I watched the parade go buy on Swanston Street:
Indeed I saw the Cup, the horsey grail itself.

With some irony, on my first trip to Australia back in 2000, my first week here in Canberra, I got to see the way people enjoyed this day.

I remember placing my bet on a 100:1 horse who ran more like 500:1 (I think he may have failed to even finish)

My notes show that my host Allan Moore won- very typical big Al!
Well, the race is on in an hour… in this modern age, I can watch on Twitter at https://melbournecup.twitter.com/.
And maybe I ought to get my next flat white coffee, I have not had one yet today.
