Today’s Daily Create was a photography challenge:

Make a photo of what friendship mean to you.

Simple. We don;t let other weirdos try to define kinds of friendship, friendship is what it is.

I was not even thinking of TDC when I took this photo- I was just looking around the house and liked the light. So on the left is Weavy. Before my sabbatical trip in 2000 to Australia a special colleague at Maricopa Community Colleges, physics teacher David Weaver, gave me this little stuffed kangaroo as a gift. Totally surprised me, but not really, David was extraordinary in many ways. I named the’ roo after him and has been a companion since, less a reminder of Australia and more of friendship.

On the right is a carved pup made by this dude Dennis I met in Idaho in 2011. I was tooling up the highway near Cottonwood and out of the corner of my eye spotted a giant building shaped like a beagle.

I had to check out Dog Park Park and ended up having a great time visiting Dennis, the owner and carver of wood dogs (more on this visit).

I could not resist buying one of his carved dogs, hence “Denny”.

So stuffed animals and carved ones, ones from Australia and Idaho, easily can be friends. It does not take much, just extending oneself.

Getting to the last week of the Daily Create Challenge- bit you can start your own at any time. Why not August? This is a great warm up for the Headless ds106 starting August 26.

  1. You see? Apparently your ability to “extend yourself” to make stories with stuffed toys and wooden simulacrums to whom you have given names is not beyond you, after all.

    Nice dog house, that.
