Rosewood State Hospital was the institution my brother David was sent to after I was born (the story on cowbird). The last time I visited I could not have been more than 10, and all I can remember is the smell and the fences outside. I always imagined it as a red brick facility, but it was actually an old mansion like structure according to photos I found in The Google.

Apparently the facility was named for the street it was on in Owings Mills, Maryland, opened in 1888 as the "Asylum and Training School for the Feeble Minded." (via Wikipedia0 Now that is a not so proud name!

Check out the history, this was mental healt care in the 1960s and 1970s, sounding not so far a step from an "Asylum for the Feeble Minded"

Between the 1950s and 1970s, as in many similar state-run institutions in the United States, there were numerous reports of malpractice, neglect and abuse. In 1981, the U.S. Justice Department declared that residents at Rosewood "failed to receive minimally adequate care". Further investigations proved positive leading to the older buildings’ being condemned in 1989

I found a photo of the main building in facebook and used the brush tools in photoshop to paint over my own version of it (I added the fence). I had never used the various brushes much so it was fun to experiment.

There is some great video photos of the fire that burnt the building on 2008 apparently the work of arsonists.

Kind of fitting.
