Grab Book Page 23 Sentence 5 Meme

Spreading to a blog near you:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 23.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

Okay, here goes. I have a copy of Clifford Stoll’s Silicon Snake Oil that I picked up for $1 at a thrift store in Payson, Arizona. I find it comical. Following the instructions to the letter, I get:

A neighborhood game of soccer is far healthier than anything on the screen.

Okay. Transharmonic, eh? What happens now? Will someone reading this spread the meme? Please do.

I followed it from mr RSS reader here then to here and here to here (way down at the bottom) and finally got to some summary from David Harris at Salon:

I’ve come across this everywhere and thought I might have a look at some of the transmission patterns. So here are a set of paths working from a particular instance of the meme going back through the quoted sources in a chain. The first sources I’m using are people who I have linked from this blog

or even more thorough, how now. brownpau?

Tracking the Page 23 Meme to its source, starting from where I first saw it: OKCalvin < Tulipgirl < Thinklings < Jared < Elfin Ethicist < Limey Brit < Woodlief < Collected Miscellany < Caterina < David Chess < Long Story Short Pier < Elkins < Happy Potterer < Sternel (fails to credit, but leaves hint in comments) < Peg Kerr < Kij < Chris < Bob Howe < Silvertide < Sentimental Curmudgeon < Tully Monster’s Fair and Balanced Fossil Record < Paintbrush Sage < Cyn < Seamus D

Wow, and finally the source at Laughingmeme

The “page 23, sentence 5” meme (hereafter referred to as p23s5) caught my attention due to its pandemic spread through the blog community, and its relative virulence among my own little, largely meme resistant affinity group (affecting me, aidan, evan, and gus). Not to mention it’s about books, and I like books.

Nice check out “Your Basic Epidemiography”- Woah Neo! a whole new blog trail to wander down..
