Blog Pile

Tag! Technorati is It (and got my feeds up to snuff)

Just days after marveling about a prototype of a combined del.icio.us + flickr service, technorati has rolled it all up into their new tagged service – combining tags from del.icio.us and flickr plus ones now extracted from feeds that Technorati crawls:

Where does the stuff on Technorati Tag pages come from?

The photos come from our friends at Flickr. Flickr is a great photo sharing community. If you’d like your photos to appear on our tag pages, join Flickr and post your photos there. And remember to tag ’em!

The links come from the nice folks at Del.icio.us. Del.icio.us is a web-based bookmarks manager. If you’d like to contribute links to Technorati Tag pages, you can join Del.icio.us, post and tag some links.

The rest of the Technorati Tag pages is made up of blog posts. And those come from you! Anyone with a blog can contribute to Technorati Tag pages.

For more, see Technorati’s tag explanation.

So it means one Technorati link does a 3 way tag roll up, e.g.

Pictures, links, and blog posts:

http://www.technorati.com/tag/podcasting
http://www.technorati.com/tag/tsunami

Of course this makes sense for topics that have photos, links, and blog postings. The Techorati tags are going to need to be grown more– as it is now, they are skimmed from blogs with Atom feeds, and it tends to use the subject categories bloggers may apply to their posts– so my grab all “pile” category is not going to make the best technorati tag.

What this did mean for this blog was to make some updates to the syndication– the main feed is and still available as RSS 1.0 http://cogdogblog.com/alan/index.rdf, but I’ve also added RSS 2.0 http://cogdogblog.com/alan/index.xml (which was always there), but now also an Atom Feed http://cogdogblog.com/alan/atom.xml (which Technorati uses to skim for its tags).

It’s an intriguing new sort of Rip-Mix-Feed approach, especially if more systems build connections to pump tags to Technorati (Wish list- if Technorati would regurgitate the combine feeds as one re-feed)
