Dogfacelift

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this November 11th, 2005 7:38 am

Hmmmm, something is different around here…. what is it? Oh yes, more than a year since I jumped ship to WordPress as my blog tool, I got around to customizing the look. Until now, I pretty much had gone with the stock default Kubrick template (which is more than okay) with my own banner image. [...]

Hip Deep in Blog Publishing

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this November 3rd, 2005 4:58 pm

I’m scurrying madly trying to ramp up a promise to have a Word Press publishing platform ready to release an online version of our mcli Forum. We have been doing a print and web version of this since 2001, and a previous ancestor since 1993.
The print version twice a year costs more than a few [...]

Running / Blogging / Running

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this October 18th, 2005 2:13 pm

I have an unwritten internal filter on the range of topics blogged here. For a personal venture I have taken up, to run a half marathon in January, I decided to set up as its own blog, on my own domain. So I won’t be really writing about it here- you can see the full [...]

What’s In an URL?

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this October 18th, 2005 1:52 pm

There are big URLs, little URLs, long convoluted database generated URLs. I’ve always leaned a bit towards the side of the fence where web site addresses that indicate what their content points to is a bit more useful than long meaningless ones. But it may not even matter.
I was struck by this today visiting one [...]

WordPressed 1.5.2

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this August 30th, 2005 4:57 pm

After running the minor upgrade for Wordpress from 1.5.1 to 1.5.2, I can say their process is rather easy. I still smile when you run the upgrade script at it says “Step 1. It may take a while though, so be patient.”, then it completes and says “There’s actually only one step. So if you [...]

“Yea! We’ve Killed the Curly Quotes”

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this August 19th, 2005 7:14 am

Wordpress has the annoying habit of displaying single and double quotes using pretty curly quotes (nice little balls on the end) which are fine for the page viewed, but they also shove them in RSS feeds, which can end up rendered as all kinds of odd characters (question marks). It also crops up when you [...]

Left Over Blog Migration Tidbits

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this August 5th, 2005 11:51 am

For some long lost reason, I was looking at my first WordPress entry from April 2005, following the easy and recommended migration from MovableTyoe.
First I had not responded to the comment about updating my Feedburner settings. Well, 4 months later, and I sprung into action, updating the blog URL, and making sure my links [...]

Spam Karma 2 Is Da Boss

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this July 25th, 2005 12:42 pm

Wow, wow, and wow… I am very tempted to ponying up some paypal dough for Spam Karma 2, the powerful plugin for Word Press 2. It assigns incoming comments and trackbacks a karma value, based on your moderation habits, content in the comment, remote blacklists, and more.
There is a raft of options for you [...]

Ico-ifiyng Your Blog

Alan Levine aka CogDog barked this July 24th, 2005 6:11 pm

Creating a web browser icon for your blog or web site is hardly mission critical, but in case anyone out there is looking for the easy way to do this, especially the WordPress crowd, here is how I did it with minimal fuss.

The typical method involves creating a facivon.ico image file and placing that in [...]

I love it- four spam roaches exterminated with one deft motion:

Also quickly added the wplicense plug-in, an easy way to puff up your WP blog with a Creative Commons license, and it comes with a free whiff of AJAX!
